Bajeskwartier.
Developing an educative route through the Green Tower.
What is Bajeskwartier Amsterdam?
Bajeskwartier Amsterdam is a project involving the development of the former Bijlmerbajes prison site in Overamstel, Amsterdam. This project is led by Bajes Kwartier Ontwikkeling, which is a consortium of AM, AT Capital and Cairn. The area is set to become a sustainable neighbourhood with mixed functions, amongst which are 1350 new residences, many new offices and several recreational spaces.
Bajeskwartier has ambitious goals to implement innovative sustainable solutions for healthy living, climate resilience, sustainable energy and circular urban food systems. The ambitions are to (become):
1) Energy-neutral;
2) Gas-free;
3) Closed waste cycle;
4) Circular material use;
5) Rainproof;
6) Healthy Urban Living, and;
7) Low-traffic neighbourhood.
How do we contribute?
The Young Urban Engineers particularly assist with the development of the Green Tower. This is being realised in the old tower of the prison and plays an important role within the master plan of Bajeskwartier. The tower is intended to bring together the systems of the neighbourhood and become a figurehead for circularity, accessibility and connectivity. As part of this plan, an educative route will be developed which takes guests through a journey of innovative and sustainable systems. Green innovations, such as air purification walls, green facades and organic food production systems, offer great potential for educational purposes. We see opportunities to contextualise these green systems with the role they play within urban areas and are currently working on possibilities to interact with commercial, corporate and local visitors.
